I can only walk…

Dawn had not yet appeared outside my window and I heard the muffled voices descending the stairs.
The attempted quiet was for the sleeping baby upstairs and not for Nana who was sleeping on the couch.

I’d finished my car camping around the perimeter of the United States and had stopped by my daughter’s home on my way back to PA. I was so looking forward to my special morning time with the grand-girls. While my mind and body were both pestering me for a few more hours sleep, there were a couple of excited young ones on the stairs.

The younger of the two said a quick good morning and headed to the kitchen for a banana. It’s a very big deal to be independent at her age and she wasn’t going to miss this pre-dawn opportunity to feed herself!
The other climbed over me and under the covers to snuggle. I absolutely love these moments.

The day before, I’d received the most precious gift from her. A slate blue bird feather. This treasure had been kept safely in her room and proudly presented to me when I arrived. I ooooo’ed and awwwww’ed over the beauty of my feather. I’ve often brought her feathers and “treasures” I find during my walks and travels. My home is filled with rocks, feathers, sand dollars, sea shells, and giant pinecones. All the grands are welcome to touch and discover the natural beauty of these travel tokens.

As we both enjoyed the early morning solitude, she and I discussed the precious gift I’d been given. Where it was found, what bird it might have belonged to, where it had been kept until my arrival.

What this intuitive wise child said next gave me great pause for reflection.

“I like to discover the world like you, Nana. Only right now, I can only walk.”

What is your dream? Your purpose? Your aspiration?
And what are you doing right now to make it a reality?
Or are the “if only’s” keeping you flat footed.
I believe so strongly we are created for a purpose. God has a plan for your life and the gifts you’ve been given. Even more so, I believe those talents and your purpose are exemplified in community.
Too many times we trip over the “if only …. “I had her talents”, “more money”, “more land”, a bigger home”, “more knowledge” and then I could be who I’m meant to be.
I’ve met so many on my travels who want to homestead, be more self-sufficient… “but all I have is a windowsill in my apartment.”

What do you have right now to help you work toward your purpose, your dream?

My granddaughter wants to discover the WORLD! That’s even bigger than my dream!
And yet, she recognizes and understands, at this very young age, she can walk to start her discovery of the world. This is what she is capable of right now. One day, she can drive a car and then fly in a plane! But in this moment, she is going to walk to begin her journey of discovery.
She doesn’t know, nor care, what others are doing around her. She’s not comparing her walk to someone else’s. She’s busy picking up beautiful bird feathers and looking for unusual rocks.
We have everything we need to get started moving forward right now…. even if we can only walk.
