35 years ago, I began my homesteading journey. Of course, in 1990, there was no existence of “urban” homesteading. I was just teaching myself “pioneer” skills, skills of yesteryear. I lived on a tiny corner lot in a suburban neighborhood in a bedroom community of Seattle, WA. I was pregnant with my 2nd child. My husband’s job mandated I learn ways to save money, not spend it.
I taught myself how to make bread by hand, no machines available. I sewed my children’s clothes, made soap, canned and pressure canned. Learned how to garden and grow a couple of fruit trees. I learned about herbal medicine. The list goes on. These skills have become a familiar part of my homesteading repertoire as my land for homesteading grew.
And today, I find myself, once again, an urban homesteader ☺️.
Today I am revitalizing my skill for kombucha! I’ve been so excited to begin another batch here in PA. I’m using the kombucha kit from Roots & Harvest, complete with ph strips. The strips are new to me – I used to “wing it” and the “taste test” would suffice for achieved success 😉
I love the book, The Big Book of Kombucha by Hannah Crum, for flavor combinations.
I am curious, does anyone else make kombucha?
So while I’m waiting for the brew to work it’s magic, I’ll raise a glass to urban homesteading and figuring out ways to cut costs and embrace more skills of yesteryear🥳
